Residential Roofing Philadelphia Shingles, Styles, Colors

The roof is one of the most important parts of your home or business, and finding the shingle type and roof construct to use is the first decision that must be made. Though it is an important one, it is not the easiest decision to make because you must consider the pros and cons of each one of the major types of shingles that are available. Certain shingles do better in certain conditions and fit certain styles and designs better than others.  Here are the five most commonly used roofing materials:

Asphalt shingles

These are the most commonly used type of shingles and are very adaptable and also relatively inexpensive, which adds to their popularity. If you choose coated asphalt shingles, you might also qualify for Energy Star Rated perks and rebates come tax season. Most asphalt shingles are available only in black and grey tones but some color options are available, though they cost more. They are less expensive and they also have an average life span of anywhere from 20 to 30 years depending on care and upkeep and weather impact over the years.

Wood shingles

These shingles are much more expensive than asphalt, but they also offer a more natural and aesthetic look to the roofs when they are properly installed and maintained. Depending on the wood used, the shingles will often last at least 30 years and maybe even as long as 50 years. Wood shingles are pressure treated and often coated to protect them against rot, fading, and warping and you can also choose colored wood shingled that match the décor and color pallet of your home.

Metal roofs

When dealing with businesses and homes that have especially flat roofs or very steep roof lines, one of the best options to consider is a metal roof. You can choose from either a solid metal sheet construct or metal shingles. Most metal roofs are relatively inexpensive, especially when one takes into account the long lifespan- up to 50 years or more. Because they’re long lasting, strong, and weather resistant, they are a popular option in many areas of the country.

Slate shingles

This material has been used in roofing philadelphia for a while now and continues to gain popularity. Slate shingles are so popular because they are extremely durable as seen by many old farm houses and barns that have remained leak-proof for 50 plus years with no upkeep or replacement of shingles needed. The drawback is that they are one of the most expensive shingles out there and many home and business owners cannot afford the cost upfront to pay for the long lasting shingles. If this is the case, you can try synthetic slate shingles, which provide  durability at a more affordable price.

Tile shingles

These shingles are a staple in Spanish architecture and buildings from the colonial time periods. Tile shingles are at the top of the list for the most expensive roofing material to purchase and install, but is king when it comes to its durability. Most tile roofs can last 70 or more years with only occasional tile replacement needed due to storm damage.  One important thing to note about tile shingles is that they are very heavy and many buildings are not able to support the sheer weight of these tiles on the roof.
