How to fix a leaking skylight

Then, you need to chisel the old roof tar off the skylight’s flanges.  This can be done with a heavy-duty wooden scrapper, which is readily available online.  You will not be able to get all of the tar off the flanges, but a good amount will suffice.  After the tar has been removed, you are going to use a knife to cut from the felt down to the rock deck.  Then, you are going to peel the backing off a ice and water shield.  Apply the shield to the exposed deck, and then weave in aluminum step flashing, so that it overlaps the strips of the step flashing and the shingles.  You are going to replace the old shingles with new ones.3. Sometimes for a leaky skylight, you will need specialized sealants.  These sealants, such as a tripolymer sealant, will seal up any cracks, so when it rains or is wet around the skylight, water will not seep through it and get into your home.  There are a lot of different types of sealants available, so it’s best to do some research and even ask a professional.  This ensures you select the right sealant to go in the cracks or holes around the skylight.4.
